Professional Teeth Cleaning

Periodic teeth cleaning, also known as prophylaxis, is typically performed by one of our dental hygienists at Dentalcare Associates. To clean your teeth, our experienced hygienists use specialized dental tools to remove plaque, tartar, and stains on your teeth above the gum line. The hygienist will then polish your teeth to remove any additional plaque and stains, leaving your mouth feeling fresh and clean.

Your dentist usually will perform a periodic exam at these visits, which may include X-rays, oral cancer screening and examination of your teeth and gums for any sign of decay, gum disease or damaged restorations. Your dentist or hygienist also will give you a primer on proper brushing and flossing techniques and address any concerns or questions you may have.

Why Is Preventive Dental Care Necessary?

Preventive dental care such as teeth cleanings, exams, and x-rays can help you achieve and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile and improve your overall health and wellness. Regular dental cleanings not only remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria; they allow your dentist or hygienist to help to detect dental conditions and diseases before they become uncomfortable and costly problems. There are various treatment options that can halt the progression of these conditions before they become more serious.

Most dentists and hygienists recommend a professional teeth cleaning at least twice a year, and x-rays once a year. More frequent cleanings and exams may be necessary if you suffer from a condition such as gum disease. Sealants and fluoride treatments are effective preventive procedures that can help to protect your teeth as well.

Practicing Good Oral Hygiene

In addition to visiting your dentist for regular exams and teeth cleaning, maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine is a must. Good oral hygiene helps to prevent cavities, plaque and tartar build-up and gum disease. Make sure to brush for two minutes twice a day and floss once a day. If you have any questions about how to properly take care of your teeth, our experienced dental team is happy to assist you in any way we can.
